Politics of Differences Pluralism  Can mean a lot of things  Sexual orientation, gender, feminism, etc. Oppression  Proponents of identity politics fight against a universalist mode of citizenship that tends to be exclusionary in practice Different approaches to pluralism  Individualist and rights-based approach  Collective or group rights: humanitarianism o One example: disability politics Case Study: Robert Latimer o He euthanized his 12 year old daughter – cognitively disabled o Cerebral palsy, quadriplegic, functioned at 3-months old, constant pain, constant dislocated hip, constant surgeries o “Compassionate homicide” o Did he do the right thing? Or was he entirely wrong?
