Document Summary

Note: chapter 4 and 5 for the second midterm. Socialization (making social) socialization: (p. 90) the lifelong social experience by which people develop their human potential and learn culture . Sociologists talk about 3 main types of socialization. Primary socialization (first or focus: happens during childhood, most important because children are particularly sensitive to the elf-fulfilling prophecy (sfp) prediction that comes true simply because a prediction has been made. Children are sensitive to this, but adults are less sensitive. Having a job, voting, sex, becoming a parent, etc: things you learn in your adulthood. Re-socialization: resocialization occurs when a new situation requires a person to replace established patterns of behaviour and thought with new patterns, repeat, repeat, repeat. Immigration, sports, disabilities, psycho-therapy, going to prison, going to the military. The time gap, is 6 9 months for tuberculosis (unsocializable) Resocialization can also sometimes be difficult, because the first patterns keep getting in the way.
