Document Summary

Cells vary enormously in appearance and function. Living cells all have a similar basic chemistry. All present-day cells have apparently evolved from the same ancestral cell. Genes provide the instructions for cell form, function, and complex behaviour. Dna synthesis is known as replication, rna synthesis is known as transcription, protein synthesis is known as translation. The invention of the light microscope led to the discovery of cells. Light microscopes allow examination of cells and some of their components. The fine structure of a cell is revealed by electron microscopy. Prokaryotes are the most diverse and numerous cells on earth. The world of prokaryotes is divided into two domains: bacteria and archaea: there are spherical cells such as streptococcus, there are rod-shaped cells such as escherichia coli, salmonella, there are spiral cells, such as treponema pallidum.
