Firearms and Toolmarks
Definitions
-Firearm: A firearm is any, assembly of a barrel and
action from which a projectiles is discharged by means
of a rapidly burning propellant
-Cartridge: Unit of ammunition consisting of the cartridge
case, primer, and propellant with or without one or more
projectiles
-Cartridge designation: An identifier created by the
manufacturer, which often includes the caliber of the
bullet and the name of the cartridge manufacturer
-Action: The part of the firearm that loads, fires, and ejects a cartridge
-Examples:
-Single action revolver
-Lever action
-Pump action
-Bolt action
-Semi-automatic
-Caliber: The diameter of a bullet
-Caliber is often expressed in hundredth of an inch
(USA and UK)
-A 22 caliber bullethas a diameter of 0.22 inches
-Caliber is also expressed in metric units (mm)

is a class characteristic
