FORS-2107EL Lecture Notes - Lecture 13: Thiocyanate, Urk, Glycerol
Forensic Science - Day 13 2018.03.05.
Drug Analysis and Identification
-Identification of unknown substances suspected to be drugs generally consists of a
combination of:
-Visual inspection (not very common anymore)
-This is of limited value, but may be useful in guiding the progression of
subsequent analyses
-Additionally, seized tablets may be identified in part by their shape, colour, and
markings (especially pharmaceuticals)
-Presumptive Testing (always followed by a confirmatory test)
-Confirmatory Test (Eg. MS)
Presumptive Testing
-Presumptive methods provide results that are used to indicate whether the
compounds of interest are likely present in a sample
-Positive presumptive test generally indicate that further confirmatory/quantitative
analysis is warranted and required
-Presumptive test are often in the form of colour test
Colour Tests
-React with reagents to form a colour
-This is used in the field to examine material suspected of containing a drug
-Screening only, so never taken as conclusive ID
-Must be simple and fast enough that any emergency responder can do this
Marquis Test
-2% formaldehyde in sulfuric acid
-Purple in presence of heroin, morphine and most opium derivatives
-Orange-brown with amphetamines and mathamphetmaines
Duquenois-Levine Test
-Test for cannabinoids (ex. marijuana)
-Solution A-2% vanillin + 1% acetaldehyde in ethyl alcohol
-Solution B - concentrated HCl
-Solution C - chloroform
-Positive result: purple colour in chloroform layer
