PSYC 1105: Introduction to Psychology
Monday October 30 2017
DTQ: Electroencephalogram test (EEG) is only true way to measure consciousness.
DTQ: William James + stream of consciousness.
DTQ: Barbiturates, and how they lower/block information coming through the brainstem.
Class video: http://www.learner.org/series/discoveringpsychology/13/e13expand.html
Consciousness integrates what we know from past, perceive in present and anticipate in future.
History of/development of psychology revolved around strategies to understand consciousness
(structuralism, functionalism, behaviorism).
Consciousness is unique to each individual, continuous, and selective in choosing from the
environment whatever is most relevant to individual’s survival.
Attention is a state of focused awareness. Selective filter that distinguishes important stimuli.
Lecture Slideshow Notes
D) Sleep
Sleep: A process in which important physiological changes (shifts in brain activity and slowing
of bodily functions) are accompanied by major shifts in consciousness.
Most often studied with electroencephalograms (EEGs).
(He skipped a couple slides here because we started this last week.)
REM stage of sleep is a temporary paralysis, called paradoxical sleep.
Debate has arisen concerning the function of sleep- recuperative or evolutionary?
- Recuperative theory; while repair of the body occurs during waking hours, repair of the
brain (ie. neurotransmitter replenishment) occurs during sleep.
- Evolutionary theory; sleep evolved to ensure that various species remain inactive when
they are not engaged in activities necessary for survival.
Sleep Disorders
- Insomnia: A disorder involving the inability to fall asleep or remain asleep.
- Somnambulism: A sleep disorder in which individuals get up and move about while still
asleep.
- Night terrors: Extremely frightening dreamlike experiences that occur during non-REM
sleep
- Sleep apnea: cessation of breathing during sleep.
- Nocturnal myoclonus: A sleep disorder in which individuals endure periodic and repeated
episodes of body twitching throughout the night.
