Brodmann numbers or areas are certain areas with similar cytoarchitecture. Structure dictates function; therefore there is a strong but not complete overlap between specific functions and brodmann regions. 2/3s of the cortical surface is buried within sulci. Cortices is about 1. 5 to 4. 5 mm thick, area of about 2200 cm^3. Info from thalamus passes through internal capsule, terminate in layers 3 to 4. Others avoid layer 4 to layer 3 or deep layers 5 and 6. Output from cortex leaves layer 6 to basal ganglia and/or thalamus, then passes caudally. Major communication in cerebral cortices occur between the upper 4 layers. Info from primary cortex travels to secondary cortices. Tertiary cortices often multimodal and involve most sophisticated processes; reasoning and thought. 6 layers, molecular, external granule, external pyramidal, internal granule, internal pyramidal, and multiform. Input from thalamus end as axon terminal on dendrites of pyramidal cells within layer 5 and some layer 6.
