PSYC-2656EL Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Roger Wolcott Sperry, Corpus Callosum, Tachistoscope
Document Summary
Corpus callosum- bundle of nerve fibers that connect the right and left cerebral hemispheres of the brain. Can be damaged, epilepsy is caused by this. Except for the sense of smell, everything is cross connected in the brain (right visual field sent to the left hemisphere; left hand controlled by the right side of the brain. Roger sperry and w. j. in the 1960"s. Used tachistoscope: a projector that had a shutter and therefore could project images/words for 1/10th of a second. Split-brain patients asked to press key underneath their table if they saw an image and then were asked by experimenter if they saw it. Objects flashed on the left side entered the right side of the brain and vice versa. One part of the brain is better at language. Left side- language, seeing patterns and producing principle from it. Right side- faces, spatial ability, emotion, casual relations. Amount of control you have over experience.
