The Sociological Perspective
Sociology is the systematic study of human society and social interaction.
Society is a large social grouping that shares the same geographical territory and is subject to
the same political authority and dominant cultural expectations.
The Sociological Imagination
The ability to see the relationship between individual expertness and the larger society;
distinguishes between personal troubles and social or public issues. Developed by C. Wright
Mills.
Philosophes
The philosopher include well known intellectuals such as; Charles Montesqieu (1689-1755),
Jean Jacques Rousseau (1712-1778) and Jacques Turgot (1727-1781). They defined a
philosophe as one who, trampling on prejudice, tradition, universal consent, and authority.
Women were categorically excluded from much of public life in France because of the sexism in
that period.
Salon — an open house help to simulate discussion and intellectual debate.
Mary Wollstonecraft (1759-1797) — These writings reflected the enlightenment spirit and her
works have recently received recognition for influencing peoples thoughts on the idea of human
equality, particularly as it relates to social equality and women's right to education.
Industrialization & Urbanization
American Revolution - 1776; French Revolution - 1789 — These revolutions were brought by
questions that concerned the social upheaval Brough but above by the age of revolution. The
rapid industrialization and urbanization that occurred first in Britain, then in Western Europe and
later in the United States.
Intellectual Revolution was produced; in how people thought about social change, progress, and
critical thinking.
Political and Economic Revolutions were produced due to the optimistic views and philosophies
of other social thinkers regarding progress and equal opportunity.
During the 19th century and early 20th century; the industrial revolution occurred.
Industrialization is the process by which societies are transformed from dependence on
agricultural and handmade products to an emphasis on manufacturing and related industries.
Urbanization is the process by which an increasing proportion of a population lives in cities
rather tan in rural areas.

Theoretical: Explanations were based on religion and the supernatural.
Metaphysical: Explanation were based on abstract philosophical speculation
