The Beginnings of Sociology In The United States
Sociology spread from western Europe to the United States in 1890’s, and thrived as a result of
the intellectual climate and rapid rte of social change. The first locations of study were at
Chicago University and Atlanta University.
The Chicago School
Robert E Park (1864-1944), asserted urbanization had a disintegrating influence on social life by
producing an increase in the crime rate and in racial and class antagonisms, contributing to the
segregation and isolation of neighbourhoods.
George Herbert Mead (1863-1931), another member of the faculty at Chicago, founded the
symbolic interaction perspective. He also emphasized on the importance of studying the group
or “the social”, rather than starting with individuals alone. Giving us important insights on how
we develop our self-concept through interaction with those who are most significant in our lives,
and drawing attention to communication in language and gestures.
Jane Adams
Jane Adams (1860-1935) — One of the best-known early women sociologists in the US. She
founded the Hull House, which is one of the most famous settlement houses in Chicago.
Throughout her career she engaged in many sociological endeavours, published many articles
and books, along with a breaking book that used methodological techniques which were
employed by sociologists for the next 40 years.
W.E.B. Du Bois & Atlanta University
W.E.B. Du Bois (1868-1963) — Founded the second department of sociology at Atlanta
University. He created a laboratory of sociology, instated a program of systematic research,
founded many journals and conferences. Du Bois was the first indivudla to acknowledge racism,
or dual heritage creates conflict for people calling this - Double- concuosness - Pointing out that
people in this country expose such values as democracy, freedom, and equality, they also
accept racism and discrimination.
