Socialization is a complicated and partial process that includes contradictory messages. Individual agency has a role in people"s decisions about which messages to ignore or react against, and in the forms such reactions take. People do gender, following complex rules about acting masculine or feminine, whether at home or work, or moving through a public space. People are also doing gender when focused on challenging the dominant rules. It is in social interaction that existing versions of gender are most often reproduced, renegotiated, or resisted. Socialization the process of learning the rules of the social group or culture to which we belong or hope to belong, and learning to define ourselves and others within that setting. Most norms specify a range of acceptable behaviours, rather than one narrowly defined possibility. The applicable content of socialization may be applicable to most or all situations, or it may apply only to certain social positions.
