ANTH-101 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Prehistoric Archaeology, Anthropological Linguistics, Historical Archaeology
Document Summary
The four fields of anthropology: biological anthropology, archaeology, cultural anthropology (ethnology, anthropological linguistics, applied (practicing) anthropology. Paleoanthropology (human paleontology: investigate the emergence of humans and their evolution, rely on fossils and the study of primates (primatology). The further back you go the more incomplete the fossils are. Human variation: could be in the past, present, or have ideas for the future: study patterns of biological variation within the human species (homo sapiens), use principles and concepts from human genetics, population, biology, and epidemiology. Reconstruct the daily life and customs of past peoples: trace cultural changes over time, involves the analysis of material remains left behind. Historical archaeology: history vs. prehistory: history generally is recorded. Is an applied field in the study of archaeology. Focus on culture: sets of learned behaviour and ideas that humans acquire as members of society. Ethnology: study why people differ in their thinking and behaviour, investigate the interrelated dynamics of culture.
