ANTH-150 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Homo Habilis, Biological Anthropology, Culture Shock
Document Summary
Most have no idea: misinformation, misunderstanding, speculation. Humans are diverse: currently, diversity is very obvious, people moving as never before. Globalized world is multicultural: global citizens live interconnected. Must build bridges across variations: learn to see ourselves in the mirror of differences; accept differences, and there is only one planet for us to share! Vital to know why: the differences. Learning about our differences is the best avenue to overcome racism. Our way of life is just one next many others. We are familiar only with our way of life. To understand and value exotic variations of humanity. Direct contact: living with others, under their conditions. Extended contact: living with others for an extended period (participatory presence) Anthropology encourages an understanding of other ways of life. Comparative perspective: assessing two (or more) cultures in a reflective manner. When the familiar becomes unfamiliar, and the unfamiliar becomes familiar. Humans are fundamentally the same, but also vitally different.
