54 views3 pages

Document Summary

Two main forms: kinetic: energy due to motion or movement. Potential: energy in store, that can be converted to another form. Nonrenewable energy sources: finite supply, consumption > renewal, fossil fuels, nuclear. Renewable energy resources: supplies > rate of consumption, biomass. Perpetual energy resources: virtually inexhaustible source, solar, wind, hydro, tidal. Commercial energy: the energy available for sale in the marketplace. Nonrenewable energy: conventional crude oil/petroleum, conventional natural gas, shale (unconventional) gas and oil, oil sands, coal, nuclear. Fossil fuels: materials of biological origin occurring within the earth"s crust that can be used as a source of energy, remnants of organisms. Carboniferous period: 360-286 mya, famous for vast swamps and large lakes and oceans, dead plants and aquatic organisms subjected to extreme heat and pressure in swamps extremely devoid of oxygen. Reclamation: turn the land into a functioning, natural ecosystem. In 2009, only 104 hectares has been certified from this.
