CLAS-102 Lecture Notes - Lecture 17: Odysseus, Scheria, Alba Longa
Document Summary
Circe becomes his girl helper (archetype: sirens: two sirens that sing all the time. Their voices attracted passing sailors, and they would stay on the island until they starved to death. Circe told odysseus to avoid the sirens spell he should fill his ears with wax. Odysseus wanted to hear the song, so his sailors tie him to the mast of the ship. The skeletons of the sailors trapped on the island were all over the shore: scylla and charybdis: scylla was a 6-headed monster that lived in a cave over a mountain side over charybdis. She would reach over the cliff and eat people. Charybdis was a giant whirlpool that appeared 3 times everyday. The whirlpool would take in ships, destroying them. It was impossible to avoid both, one would kill them. Odysseus begged circe to tell him how to get past the dangers, no way.
