In 1496, henry the 7th was commissioning john cabot and was asked to find the western route to asia which was never found, but he did find nova scotia and newfoundland for england. He also discovered vast schools of cod off the grand banks. The english took a while to take advantage of it, and the portuguese were fishing from it many years before they did. In the 16th century, there"s a search for the route of asia. In 1608, champlain sets his colony in quebec. In 1607, the london company establishes james town in virginia, named after the virgin queen elizabeth i: french effort were more focused on the model of forts and ports. What they wanted was trade in one precious commodity. All of those forts are about having contact with first nations so they can buy beaver pelts.
