Document Summary

Rural reforms in the people"s republic of china. Rural reform: mao"s early efforts for reforms, confiscation of lands by the peasants. The peasants want to keep their land even though the goal is no private ownership, all state owned and equally distributed: violence against the landlords. A lot of violence from the peasant as they feel they are supported by the government to challenge the authority of the landlords: productivity is increased, land-to-tiller policy succession. Almost a surprise of how successful it is. People lose control of the land that was theirs to collectivization which is the model of agriculture: use of intellectuals and universities in the 1950s to promote the communist message. Intellectuals should be engaged in issues and examine his view of ideology and write about them. The intellectuals aren"t quite sure about his agenda and are not sure if mao will not want to hear certain opinions.
