PHIL-250 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Christian Contemplation, Eudoxus Of Cnidus, Techne
Document Summary
Pleasure is not the ultimate pleasure; it is subordinated to justification: because one is willing to question. Theoria: a greek term meaning to see things as they truly are, not just as they appear. To aristotle, a contemplative life is the life worth living (contemplative aspect of life is the highest form a philosophical life) For most species experience is in terms of instinct and self-interest: the lion chases the zebra and will never see it as anything other than food. Pre-teologically determined: things are set to be perceived in a certain way. But humans can get out of their limited perspectives of instinct we can understand that viewpoints differ and shift between persons. Goal is theoria: to see the world as it is, rather than mere appearance. The crudest humans see happiness as nothing more than pleasure it diminishes our capacity as humans.
