The individuals have certain freedoms and natural rights. John locke: "individuals are given natural rights; all men are created equal. " People should be free and do what makes them happy as long as they don"t harm anyone else. Positive liberty: doing things to make you happy, self fulfillment. Negative liberty: don"t control me, don"t restrain or interfere with what i do: the human body is sovereign -- pro choice, believe in the idea of utilitarianism: pursuit of the greatest happiness of the greatest majority. Human nature is naturally good, optimistic, and trustworthy: believe in the civil society: multiple groups engaged in forming associations/groups to protect their interests. (ngos). Strong supports of constitutional/limited government: government should not have too much power. Liberals believe in social justice: equality of opportunities. Classical liberalism: believe in free market/regulation of market. Modern liberalism: reformed liberalism, closer to social democracy.
