PSYC-223 Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Anti-Social Behaviour, Strum, Inductive Reasoning
Document Summary
In adults, it seems to foster prosocial behaviour: paired up four year olds, and assigned them to. Subtype of altruism: helping others for unselfish reasons; even to the detriment of your own interests. Preliminary study: share a toy with a puppet (giving) or activate an animal sound toy (non-giving). Prosocial behaviour: voluntary behaviour intended to benefit others; usually motivated by sympathy, empathy or moral emotions (ie guilt, shame). Can also be done for selfish reasons: ie making oneself do good. Antisocial behaviour: behaviour that lacks consideration for others, and may harm them. When children shared the toy, they showed more positivity in the first preliminary study. Coding for positivity of facial expression: child is more excited to give the treat to the puppet themselves (altruism) versus just watching the puppet eat the treat, or being given an extra treat to give the puppet. So positive self emotion may in part be driving giving behaviour.
