Gestational diabetes: when there is high levels of sugar present the baby may be quite large at birth, making birth dangerous for the mother. Risks factor of low birth weights: type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease sids, long term nurtrition issues. Stems from mothers malnutrition: in a mother malnourished to an extent the body will take care of the baby first. But at high levels of malnutrition, the baby will be sacrificed to the mothers health (low chance of survival, often pre-term or low birth weight) Kahnawake case study: aim at primary prevention of type 2 diabetes. Concerns about higher rate of type 2 diabetes as well as more deaths from such and severe complications (ex amputations, comas etc) 1994: participatory community research: community governance approves of research and has an interest in actively taking part.
