May require social skills training which is rare in sad. Avoidant pd may have traits of psychotic disorder: Unwilling to get involved with others unless certain of being liked. Restrained in activities/intimate relationships due to fear of shame and ridicule. Preoccupied with criticism and rejection in social situations. Inhibited in new interpersonal interactions due to feeling inadequate. Reluctant to engage in new activities and personal risk. Cluster c: anxious and fearful; chronic personality anxiety. Overall: sad on steroids, pervasive social inhibition and strong feelings of inadequacy, hypersensitive to negative evaluation. Etiology: commonly report parental rejection or lack of love (but this is a bias present in the disorder may be memory distortion) Treatment graduated exposure to feared situation, social skills training in group therapy; no difference between treating sad and avoidant pd. But may require longer treatment, more chronic and pervasive. Comorbidty with sad at 40%; but qualitative and quantitative differences.
