Document Summary
All happens at the same time (braking and forming a covalent bond happens at the same time). Chemistry looks at the equation more theoretically and biology looks at the overall result. Startch is storage product to provide energy for plants. In green we can see cell walls also made of sugars. The smallest sugar you can get has 3 carbon atoms. Every carbon atom carries one functional group (either a hydroxyl or carbonyl). Hydroxyl: oh, there are usually lots of these. Sugars always have the same number of carbon atoms and oxygen atoms. Depending o(cid:374) where the co (cid:894)(cid:272)ar(cid:271)o(cid:374)yl(cid:895) is: if it is i(cid:374) the e(cid:374)d it is (cid:272)alled a(cid:374) aldose a(cid:374)d if it"s i(cid:374) the (cid:373)iddle it is (cid:272)alled a ketose. Sugars just carry more of the alchohol (hydroxil) groups. That is why it is easy to make alchohol from sugar.
