Document Summary

Lecture 1 and 2: cell cycle and mitosis/meiosis. The classical theory is that a mother cell divides into 2 daughter cells. This means that the components from the mother must be in the daughter. Cells spend a lot of ime dividing chromosomes. Karyotype the staining and organizing of chromosomes to see them beter. Chromosomes can only be seen during cell division. Number of chromosomes (piece of dna) is the same for each species, but varies from one species to another. Ex) humans have 46 chromosomes made of 22 homologs and 2 sex chromosomes. The sex chromosomes act as homologs but look diferently. In eukaryotes chromosomes come in homologs (idenical pairs) These chromaids are held together by the centromere, which is a bundle of ightly packed proteins. One of each chromaid goes to each daughter cell. Dna wraps around proteins called histones that keep long strands of dna packed, not tangled. The combinaion of dna and proteins is called chromain.
