Document Summary

There is a negative correlation between transposon mobility and tness: more transposon mobility = more mutants -> knock out genes -> tness drops. Spontaneous mutations occur from insertion of mobile dna element into or near a transcription unit: ex. A knock out of the functional gene coding for purple kernels due to a transposable element. Can look at the phenotype -> kernels which were purple are now yellow: transposable elements are helpful in understand the function of genes in a lab since they change the phenotype of the subject. Transposon-tagging for the dissection of gene function: ex. Half of the spontaneous mutations in drosophila result from insertion of mobile dna element into or near transcription unit. Gene duplication can result from unequal crossing over/recombination between mobile dna elements dispersed throughout genomes: misalignment of chromosomes before cross over occurs, if crossed over, top strand would have a duplicated gene.
