Today: getting through selection, so that next class we can talk about speciation and extinction: trying to finish micro 1 and 2. Mechanism based on 3 conditions (based on malthus): Intrinsic increase in number of individuals within a species: competition for limited resources. Mechanism: natural selection: want to get into the mechanics, those individuals with more favorable features would on average fare better than competitors and survive, passing advantageous characteristics on to offspring. *most important thing: relative fitness (not always negative selection i. e. one is maladapted) Other: positive selection: both fare well, but one fares better. Negative - not able to survive (drastic environmental change) Positive - all the variants are doing fairly well but some have an edge over reproduction. Struggle for existence or survival of the fittest: biotic factors - those coming from other living organisms, abiotic factors - adaptation to non biological things (changes in climate/other properties that are non biological.
