CHEM 110: MAIN GROUP CHEMISTRY
Group 17 Hydrides:
e.g. fluorine (weakest acid HF acid), chlorine, bromine, iodine (strongest acid,
HI):    =      ,  
Group 17 Oxides and Oxoacids: More oxygens = stronger oxoacids, more acidic
- Several versions
- Less acidic the less the electronegative the atoms are
Group 18: Noble Gases
Atomic Properties:
- 8,2 oxidation sates ( Kr Rn),
- Smallest size/highest valence
- Highest IE in period
- Size increases down the group
- IE/EN decreases down the group
Physical Properties:
- All free atoms
- Mp/bp increases (no metallic elements) as you get heavier
- Density increases down group
- Easier to bond to heavier noble gases (Xe down)
Neil Bartlett: new structures being formed with Xe, complex ions, platinum complexes,
first molecule species XeF4
Gary Schrobiligen - fundamental science, labs to make reactivity between elements
and noble gases
Superfluids unique traits, He low melting point, 0 viscosity
CHAP 24: TRANSITION ELEMENTS AND THEIR COORDINATION COMPOUNDS
Properties of Transition Elements:
- ‘d’ block, inner transition ‘f’ block (lanthanides, actinides)
- All metals
- Many coloured
- Many are paramagnetic
- Properties of compounds related to electron configuration of TM element/ion
Period 4: First Row Transition
- Most commonly used elements
- P. 4&5 [noble gas] ns2(n-1)dx
