Document Summary

Phys 183 the milky way inside and out tracy webb. Winter 2013 satellites in low earth orbit crash to earth because of friction with small amount of atmosphere. Planets can capture moons asteroids which orbit the sun can be caught by a planet (also atmospheric?) Escape velocity for the surface of the earth (any object) is 11 km/s or 40 000 km/h the earth"s tides. Moon"s gravity pulls harder on the near side of the earth than the far side. Difference stretches the earth & causes tidal bulges land & oceans stretch, but water flows more freely. As you move away from the moon the gravitational attraction is weaker tides and phases of the moon size of tides depend on phase of the moon. During new or full moon, sun & moon are aligned and work together to cause large tides spring tides.
