Document Summary

Sun will run out of hydrogen to burn in 4 billion years. Helioseismology: study of the oscillations of the sun, supports solar model. Reason why we are so confident in our model of the suns nuclear mechanisms. Fusion is the only way to produce enough energy. Composition shows sun is 76% hydrogen and 22% helium. Can detect neutrinos from the sun since they fly through everything. In the sudbury neutrino experiment, they found only a 3rd of the neutrinos expected. The reason is neutrinos come in different flavours, and each one interacts differently. (experiment only detected electron neutrinos). So they made another observatory with heavy water to detect all neutrinos. Below photosphere, gas is opaque, opaquity at photosphere is low enough to let light pass through. Above photosphere is chromosphere, above chromosphere is corona. Lines of magnetic field get twisted and releases energy. Can also observe sun spots, where plasma magnetic field is very strong and deflects hot glass away.
