Moving things will naturally stop if left alone. However if completely left alone nothing will stop. Other things in the world are actively stopping moving things. Physics: things happen for a reason: all effects have a cause, if you look carefully enough (ignoring quantum mechanics, if nothing new is happening to an object, it will just keep doing what it was doing. Newton"s 2nd law restated: change in velocity determined by strength of net applied force. Change in velocity over time defined to be acceleration: change in velocity also determined by mass of object: twice the mass leads to . 5 the effect for fixed force. Empirically, different objects are more or less difficult to acceleration. Equally difficult, no matter what mechanism you try as a force: force = mass x acceleration f = ma. Force = change over time of (mass x velocity: acceleration = (applied force) x (1/mass)
