Document Summary

Retroperitoneal structures development in posterior abdominal wall. Urinary system, relate it to reproductive system: kidneys, adrenals, ureter. Kidneys, adrenals, ureters develop retroperitoneally: primary retriperitoneal: bladder is behind pubic symphysis, kidneys develop in pelvic region, displaced upwards to sit under diaphragm at posterior lumbar region. So clinically, often the kidney is lower than expected: l kidney higher than r kidney. Genitals: gonad vessels develop at l1/l2 level, move down as kidneys move up. 2 kidneys fuse to 1 horseshoe shape at midline, still retains 2 hila. Esp important in females because this distorts reproductive organs. Descending aorta is retroperitoneal: renal, gonadal arteries, common iliac arteries. External iliac femoral artery (beyond inguinal ligament) supplies lower limbs. Subphrenic, aorta, renal vessels all go to adrenal glands. Left renal vein is longer, gets blood from left testicular/ovarian veins. Ureter gets blood from different vessels along its path. Dev: renal arteries develop separately from kidneys. Adrenal medulla/endocrine structure is part of sympathetic.
