ANAT 321 Lecture 7: 7-TheMotorSystem
Document Summary
The nervous system computes extremely complicated movements but in super easy way. Movement starts with an internal representation (the goal of the intended movement) and translate it into action. Tell the person to write the sentence with the right hand (a), then with the left hand, then with the mouth, then foot. The motor system is very much like the sensory system but in the other direction. Start with an abstract goal and translate that goal in the movements necessary to achieve these goals. The motor system has both hierarchical and parallel organization. Movement systems do this because they are hierarchically organized. You can carry out very complex movements effortlessly is because the details of the movements are relocated to low levels in the hierarchy. You can start out at a high level with an abstract goal and the abstract goal is translated into a certain pattern of movement.
