Anth 202 - lecture 3 - a history of anthropology part 1: anthropology before. Dress is often the biggest cultural indicator. Man is by nature a social animal . Anyone who isn"t like this is either a beast or a god . Idea that your government and society are the same. Socrates decided to die rather than be banished. There"s an us and others, the outsiders are barbarians. The greeks were less sensitive to outside differences, very inward thinking and called outsiders barbarians. Very different from romans who were expansive, learned about others to be able to rule over them well. Greek thought as most influential thought, but romans were also very influential. Brought on the idea of legal pluralism: allowing multiple sets of laws in one society (ex: canada with indigenous rights and practices) They were in a sense anthropologists: collected info about others or barbarians to take them over and rule them well.
