The way in which groups maintain themselves in the dialectic of dichotomies- creates coherence. Movement between structure and anti structure moves people to live morally. Rites that accompany every change of social status by individuals or groups . Argued that every rite of passage had three stages. Detaches an individual or group from a former status. I. e changing from normal clothes to clothes for pilgrimage. The person subject to the ritual is in limbo" because they have been detached from the old status, but not yet entered the new one. Entails certain kind of rites and behaviors appropriate to it. I. e someone might encounter certain taboos that they cannot do while in this stage (people are often isolated or in a temporary different status) Passage from one status to another is symbolically consummated. Finally completed, return to the group as someone different or with a different status.
