A relatively young discipline, which emerged in the late 19th century. It has its foundations in already existing elds, much as geography, comparative linguistics and philosophy. The latter has been a particular fertile ground that has helped generate questions that have helped shaped anthropology. Following the establishment of sociology, scholars went out to study societies di erent from their own. Anthropology is a compound of two greek words, anthro and logos, aka human and reason. Anthropology means reasons about humans" or knowledge about humans". In the 1700, an important series of changes were starting to take place in europe. The period of exploration coincided with the end of the dark ages in europe. By the 1700 the religious doctrines started to loosen, allowing scholars to engage in more free, creative thinking. Important thinkers like smith and hulme argued that the only valid source of knowledge was rst hand experience.
