Tradiional usages of the tswana changed considerably owing to contact with europeans. A chief can with the approval of his people abolish or modify usages or introduce new regulaions. In no other tribe has there been any comparable atempt at systemaic recording, although a chief did occasionally write down new law either for his own purposes for the informaion of the government. The volume of legislaion varies from tribe to tribe. Tswana law nowadays difers in may respects from tradiional system: new features almost universal, a man may no longer divorce his wife for barrenness, decline of polygamy.
