Anth 322 - social change in modern africa. Office hours: 3 - 5pm on tuesdays leacock 822 a (email if i plan to come) Africa is not a singular place, with limited experiences. Understand how experiences of african people shape the course of social change (&modernity) Looking at how african people see changes and how they react to them. Key concepts: politics of representation, multi-directionality of global flows, global disjuncture. What(cid:1685)s told about modernity vs realities of modernity. Understand social change - toe explain how africans understand environmentalism, hr, international global flows, etc. = people(cid:1685)s experiences have been very diverse over time. 3 themes: africa & press + role of anthropology - how it has challenged stereotype of men & women, multidimensionality of people, flows, institutions (historical perspective, social culturural changes (topics) * film journal - november 15th : three entires, on per film marked with an * in the syllabus. 500 words each, so 1500 for my journal.
