History of development: field of international development. Inequalities between the north and south became unacceptable. Inauguration of president truman: he wrote (cid:498)we must embark on a bold paradigm for the improvement and growth of underdeveloped areas(cid:499) (cid:498)old imperialism has not place now(cid:499) (cid:498)envision program of development based on democratic fair dealing(cid:499) Institutional apparatus of development: wb: financed projects, built infrastructure, provided loans to developing countries, capital programs. Known for huge structural projects around the world. Imf: macro-economic policies, managed balance of payments, managed conditions for loans: usaid, dfid, ngo, oxfam: inter-governmental and non-governmental institutions. Just a shifting term: economic development =/ improve human figures poverty actually rising. So development has changed but is still present (has grown significantly). Wb facts about africa"s development: figures proving that africa"s development has shifted, nowadays: development includes literacy rate, health, human indicators, Anthropology and development: malinowski understanding of what local well-being is, local understandings of wealth are not the same between different cultures!
