Morgan argued for the unity of societies. That were all one people, no kind is stuck in a stage of development forever. First chair in anthropology at oxford: marks the definite institutionalization of anthropology in england (around same time in u. s) Writes primitive culture in 1871: defines culture from start. Germany kultur/folk: used in the plural, when used in singular form it explains the conception at large. Arts, literature, values: defining of the culture in question (singular form) Acquired by man as a member of society: not genetic, wants to study culture beyond biology (acknowledges darwin but makes explicit he is not including it yet by irony he speaks of hierarchies). If we follow it, we can see that human will has no substance. Says we have to focus on chain and effects: nothing happens by chance, we can explain these cause/effect by collecting data.
