Coulthard, Glen. “Beyond Recognition: Indigenous Self-Determination as
Prefigurative Practice.” Chapter 12, in Simpson (2008).
• capitalist limitations of recognition
o too race and class centric
• imperfect recognition of self determination
• recognizing people as self determining but there still is a power imbalance
o impossible for equitable relations to form under capitalism
▪ economy, jobs
▪ nationalist growth
• where does self determination come from
o “taking matters into their own hands”
o return to traditional bodies of knowledge (that have existed without capitalism)
• what role does the government play in self determination
o none?
o don’t need government acknowledgement
o create space
▪ but how do they do this?
o ecological and scientific knowledge that support traditional knowledge -- but
does this feed into the paternalistic relationship
• do bureaucratic processes slow down life projects
Asch Chapter 9
• what do we think of Michael Asch’s project? is it the way to go forward this this
project?
• The welfare state
• Mentality of self sufficiency — but there are distinct life ways
• What is Asch’s project?
• Is his approach only recognition, or more than that?
o A political reciprocity based in power shifts
o A vision of a more equitable relationship
• His strength is in his very rigid legal approach to treaty history
• Presenting it as of course you cannot just occupy other people’s property
o How did it become normal to do this on Indigenous territory?
o Un-normalizing settler occupation of Indigenous land
o Why don’t treaties not carry more weight legally?
• Since the beginning of history people have been taking land that isn’t ours
• How do define the scope of community
o Moral community
• Easier to conceive of proletariat
o Urbanisation = territory open for any neoliberal project; identity diffused
• Asch is an optimist
o has a faith in the potential goodness of Canadian institutions (especially in
American ex-pats in Canada)
o Resentment towards home country?
