ANTH 540 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Toxic Masculinity, Grip Strength, Libido
Cross-cultural differences across sexes
N.B. within-group variation is high
Females (traits varying by effect size)
oSmall: conformity, general verbal ability, general intelligence, indirect aggression
(gossip), interpersonal traits, sensitivity to negative emotions, spatial location ability
oMedium: tendency to smile
oMed/large: preference for status in mates, tender-mindedness
oLarge: Body fat, cooking (in forager model - controversial in anthro), early puberty onset
& cognitive development, empathy, interest in people (vs things), preference for female-
typical toys, preference for taller mate, primary caretaker, sexual disgust, vulnerability to
depression (could be due to empathy/sensitivity to negative emotions - risk hypothesis,
rumination hypothesis)
Males
oSmall: impulsivity, sexual jealousy (maybe?)
oMedium: 3D geometric ability, high blood pressure, risk-taking, sex drive (varies with
age - remains higher with age in women), task-oriented leadership
oMedium/large: mental rotations ability, physical aggression, preference for physically
attractive mate (More interested in genetic traits)
oLarge: deep voice pitch, early mortality, grip strength, height, likelihood of homicide &
successful suicide, preference for rough play, throwing ability, upper-body strength,
vulnerability to psychopathy, vulnerability to autism
Sam's research: paternal investment in children
Reframing different traits in strength-based context
oHigh-empathy: better at noticing, remembering, tending to other people's needs, better
cooperators, better leader
oLow-empathy: lower risk of conformity and insecure attachment, allows space for
growth/self-regulation/problem-solving, better leadership
oHigh-disgust: lower mortality risk, more order, better health status
oLow-disgust: more resilient immune system (exposure to stressors), more openness to
experience, better health status
oMen
Physical safety (strength against threats), resilience safety, "camping trip"
rituals, socializations & skill teaching outside the home, teaching
oWomen
Immunological safety, nutritional safety, teaching of household families & social
norms, teaching of empathy
Discussion
