Large Infrastructure Projects as Urban Design: Avenues & Boulevards
03/23/18
A preoccupation of urban design: challenge universal standards by focusing instead on
“performance dimensions” … as expressed by guidelines
Four generic types of urban design work:
oTotal urban design
oAll-of-a-piece urban design
oPiece-by-piece urban design
oPlug-in urban design
Creating an infrastructure/ frame into which other projects can be
inserted… or inserting a piece of infrastructure into an existing urban
fabric to act as catalyst
Ex- “A walking city” – Ron Herron (1960’s)
Ex- the Montreal metro
Ex- the arterial roads surrounding Montreal/ Toronto
Arterial roads
oCan serve as gathering spaces
Gehl: necessary, optional, and social activities
oTensions between place and corridor
oServes as linear extensions from the city
oServes as shared space for many modes of transport
oChallenges to pedestrian movement
Can be exurban, or midtown and urban
oExample: Toronto, St. Clair
Tensions between residents, don’t want “unwelcome” people to pass
through
