Function?
-Patron (commissioner’s interests = what the work is trying to convey to the viewer)
-Artist (artist and artistic identity beginning to change. Previously seen as craftsman for the
wealthy, rather than an influencer)
-Ex. Michael Angelo was the first artist who began to gain personal power
-Viewer (addressing, soliciting, looking for a viewer’s response)
-Questioning what it is trying to convey — emotionally, power between the work of art vs.
the viewer…
-Setting: where was the image originally placed (before being viewed in a museum; bedroom,
street, alter…
-Visual Component: materials used, colours, composition, gesture, expression…conveying
