ATOC 182 Lecture Notes - Lecture 13: Micrometer, Radiolaria, Krill
Document Summary
They eat dissolved organic matter that comes from other single cells which get blow apart by virus, this creates organic matter dissolved in the water. Marine snow: bacteria concentrate in the marine snow. Some of the bacteria can swim very fast there are prokaryotes with flagellas. They go fast in relation to their scale. They can swim up to 100 body length per second. They swim around looking for organic material, they wonder around in a random pattern. Their swimming pattern is a random up and down motion that is kind of like a drunk guy walking. The bacteria vary the frequency of their changes in direction when swimming this happens because they are able to tell were there is a potential for organic matter. Bacteria get attached to aggregation of organic matter ( dead cells/waste) which ends up looking like snow falling through water.
