Document Summary

Halocline: happen due to the formation of ice over the continental shelf. The ice leaves salty water behind and creates denser salt water which sinks and creates the zone of the halocline which i a zone of cold saltier water. Bellow that zone there is warmer saltier and therefore denser water. Phytoplankton manages to use 1/3 of the energy from the sun to make glucose. Even though phytoplankton are microscopic they can form chains long enough to be visible. Cynobacteria: includes all prokaryotic phytoplanton, blue and green algea. Haptonphytes: include coccolithophorids, which is used to make the caco2 shells, eukaryotic cells (single cells), come across there is the sediments, you can see there shells in the sediment cores. You can also use these to do analysis of the isotopic composition which is used to extract information about the ice ages.
