ATOC 182 Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Convection, Chlorophyll, Melting Point
Document Summary
Blue light gets scattered much easier and the red gets scattered the less. The blue light gets scattered in every direction of the atmosphere that why the sky is blue. Green flashes happens in the tropics, during clear skies, in very flat horizon. Happens close to the equator because the sun is setting straight down. Happens because at that point enough light has been scattered to be able to see a little bit of the green and blue light of the spectrum. Unlike the atmosphere, absorption of light if strongly dependent on wavelength. Blue light has the longest wavelength and it gets absorbed much easier. In costal water there is more stuff in the water so the light doesn"t penetrate as far down and the chlorophyll of the water absorbs the blue and all that"s left is the green light.
