AEBI 210 Lecture Notes - Allelopathy, Herbivore, Plant Cell

35 views2 pages

Document Summary

Herbivores consume principally autrotrophs (animalso eating plants and fungi) Herbivory connect energy in plants to other organisms in the ecosystem. Herbivores can inoculate plants with pathogens and rot-inducing microbes. Many agricultural plants have many diseases and pests. Fungal diseases can attack everywhere on a plant. Viral diseases are especially problematic in perennial plants. Viruses can survive many years with the plant. Bacteria is used as a vector for genetic engineering. Animals, insects and invertebrates can also be threats. Other plants can be parasites, or create competition and allelopathy. Since plants are sedentary, they have evolved different mechanisms for defense. Defenses increases the ability of a plant to survive or reproduce. Chemicals may be secreted by trichomes, or found in plant cells. Can prevent a disease organism from entering a plant cell. When a cell is wounded it has a rapid oxidative burst. The cell dies, potentially eliminating the pathogen before it can spread.
