Description
Organisms 1- AEBI-210 001 November 23rd, 2012 Herbivory and Plant Defense Mechanisms Herbivory: Herbivores consume principally autrotrophs (animalso eating plants and fungi) Herbivory connect energy in plants to other organisms in the ecosystem Herbivores can inoculate plants with pathogens and rot-inducing microbes Insects and nematodes are important for plants Many agricultural plants have many diseases and pests Biotic Threats: Fungal diseases can attack everywhere on a plant Viral diseases are especially problematic in perennial plants -Viruses can survive many years with the plant Bacterial diseases cause rotting and galls -Bacteria is used as a vector for genetic engineering Animals, insects and invertebrates can also be threats Other plants can be parasites, or create competition and allelopathy Defense Mechanisms: Since plants are sedentary, they have evolved different mechanisms for defense Defenses increases the ability of a plant to survive or reproduce Passive defenses are preventative -Physical defenses -Cuticle, trichomes, secondary wall (cork), thorns etc... -Chemical defenses -Taste, odour, digestibility, toxicity etc... -Chemicals may be secreted by trichomes, or found in plant cells -Can prevent a disease organism from entering a plan
