Phyllum Mollusca (Lophotrochozoans)  2 largest animal phyllum  COELOMATE PROTOSTOMES  TROCHOPHORE LARVAE (most + marine)  Terrestrial or aquatic  Bilateral symmetry, triploblastic…  Major groups: body plan vars of ancestral mollusc Body Plan  Foot, mantle visceral mass  Radula: rough + scrape algae + bryozoans off surfaces  Mantle cavity has gills (aquatic) or lungs (land) 1) Polyplacophora  Segmented shell: 8 overlapping plates  Multiple gills (in mantle grooves along foot)  Large muscular foot  Can roll into a ball  Omnivorous  Eg Chiton Bivalvia  Hinged shell, reduced head  Enlarged foot (anchorage + digging in soil) and gill  Mantle cavity modified by siphons (extension of posterior mantle)  Filter feeders (gills act as filters for food)
