What is ecology: rules of assembly from individuals to population to communities to ecosystems. <3: most aware of the disruption of the world, there is a complexity in getting the data we need. To make rules from what the observe in nature - need theory and modeling: will be doing basic mathematical ecology because it"s a very important part of our understanding of systems. Population paramteres and demography: chapter 8 and chapter 17, population as unit of study (p. 113-118, demography (p. 122-132, why should we care? (p. 323-328) *if you know the number of individuals at a given time: and you know the birth/death/emigration/immigration rate. Should be able to predict how it will change over time: parameters largely controlled by external factors to the population, (weather/climate/temperature/nutrition/availability) We are more sure about maternity (we know when a female gives birth and who her offspring are, but we are never quite sure who the father is of the offspring.
