BIOL 306 Lecture Notes - Lecture 32: Sleep Paralysis, Ac Propulsion Ebox, Non-Rapid Eye Movement Sleep
Document Summary
Goats sleep like 4hrs, and are very easily aroused/woken up. You need sleep for metabolic clearance, replenish energy supplies, essential for cognitive and memory tasks (e. g. consolidation) Moderate sleep deprivation can lead to impaired concentration, irritability, more severe deprivation can lead to hallucinations, tremors, unpleasant mod, decreased responses of the immune system. Sleep is a battle between circadian arousal drive (awake) vs. homeostatic sleep drive (sleep) Circadian arousal drive controls circadian rhythm, endogenous circadian clock, clock genes. Homeostatic sleep drive involves mechanisms of sleep, sleep circuits, sleep disorders. You can have different levels of drive, depending onstage of the day/stage of sleep. As you just wake up, your awake drive is not that high; as the day progresses, awake drive increases; as evening progressing, sleep drive starts taking over and sleep onset is when brain. Awake drive is higher during the day, dips in the afternoon (siesta) and is very low at night; sleep drive is opposite.
